One of the few characters we see riding a bike is Lisa Simpson. Lisa rides her bike in every episode, the opening sequence, theoretically saying that she is a daily rider of her bike to and from school. She is an everyday cyclist.
Lisa is the liberal of the family. Lisa rides her bike because she is an intellectual, or, if you rather, she is thoughtful of life. She is concerned about the environment, and understands that her actions have consequences.
In the opening sequence, Lisa is carrying a stack of books and her saxophone as she rides over hills and one sizable bump. She is set up with both a front and back rack on her bike.
I will not mention that she is wearing a helmet, but I will state that her helmet is not on correctly--it does not cover her forehead.

I've always noticed the saxophone on the back, but I don't think I've noticed that she has a large stack of books. Bart rides a bike, too, sometimes, but in the show opener he's on the skateboard.
In the episode where Bart has to help Skinner with pre-dawn astronomy (this was the early 90s so there's nothing creepy about that) he rides a bike with a bottle generated front light. If only we could find those on kids bikes stateside!
Ash, if only.
